Benjamin Franklin famously told a woman, who asked about the kind of government the founders had created, that we had “a republic, if you can keep it.” In a self-governing society, keeping our system free and operating as our founders intended, which is a government of the people, by the people and for the people, there is one basic need – knowledge. A people ignorant of how government works, or even who is governing, can cause great problems and lead to tyranny. Another new study finds that even college graduates are woefully ignorant of the American system of government. Eight states have recently passed laws to make civics education more important in high school. AFA promoted a similar bill in Indiana, but it fell short on final passage in the State Senate.
